PROJECT01: Earth Month Journal

This project aims to increase awareness on Building Services usage (ie electricity, water etc) and its impact on the environment. You are to keep a journal of your current lifestyle, reflect and then create a ‘greener’ lifestyle for yourself and in the spaces that you design in future.

For this earth month journal assignment, we are required to record our lifestyle within a period of six (6) weeks in a journal form. We can do it in any formats so I decided to have my journal in a diary form.

            After few lectures from my building services lecture Miss Sharon, I was so shocked at the impacts to the environment from the daily activities from we human. So I decided to first look on the problems that existed around me, here I found one. At block E at fifth floor, the first cell of the left row of the toilet has leaking problems. It has been leaking for the past few weeks and nobody takes any actions to it. I think I should start be more involving at the issues around me, start reporting the leaking problems to the certain department so they could take actions to it.

 

            I used to drive very frequently from hostel ( PJS7/2 ) to campus (Taylor’s) way back and forth if there is any heavy load class days. Its shocking that I could drive 6 times to&from these two places  IN A DAY. After calculation, I might have wasted atleast 10litres of fuel in a month and are responsible for a 27.6KG of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emission for the earth every month!

I also did researches on the elevator system and the cost of operation. I always take elevator services when im in hurry or the destination floor level is just about 2/3 levels from the current floor level im in. I decided to take the stairs more and cut down the elevator usage for the EARTH’s SAKE and my HEALTH’s SAKE 

 

Me and my sister share a bedroom, we will switch on the air conditioner (A/C) before bed (12AM) and after waking up (5.30AM) for almost everyday. Almost the same situation goes to my parents’s room and my brother’s room. So, after calculation, the electricity fee for just A/C will be RM57 per month. After discussion, ive made my family members feel glad to join the ‘mission” – cut down the usage to 6days in a week. Only fan in rainy days and breezy days.

 

            Another important issue : WATER. I never knew one flushing action takes 13 LITRES of water to it. Its very shocking to know it when Miss Sharon told us the fact. I never had a thought to question it. After calculation I found out that me as a person who drinks a lot everyday have to go to toilet for atleast 5-6 times , that could be a 546LITRES of water EVERY WEEK! How shocking it is . Ive come to a solution to lead myself (and my family) to a greener lifestyle, that is by preparing a water pail in the toilet. When the urine is not really pungent and yellowish, me and family will just use the water in the pail. That could save atleast a half of it = 273litres a week.

 

For a greener lifestyle, for a better earth, I will put more efforts in all the little things in life!
